St Vincent’s Private Radiology is proud to announce its participation in the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), a vital new initiative aimed at detecting early-stage lung cancer in Australians at high risk, before symptoms appear.
As the leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia, lung cancer claimed more than 8,900 lives in 2024. Alarmingly, most diagnoses occur at a late stage when treatment options are limited. This national screening program represents a critical step forward in improving early detection, enabling timely treatment and significantly improving outcomes.
St Vincent’s Private Radiology is now offering bulk billed, low-dose CT chest scans to eligible individuals through the program. These scans use significantly reduced radiation levels and are designed specifically to detect lung abnormalities in their earliest, most treatable stages.
Our radiology team works closely with respiratory and oncology specialists at St Vincent’s Hospital to ensure seamless follow-up care. If a scan reveals any concerning findings, patients can be quickly referred for further investigations such as PET scans, biopsies, or consultation with a specialist team.

To refer a patient to the National Lung Cancer Screening Program at St Vincent’s Private Radiology:
- Confirm eligibility using the NLCSP criteria
- Enrol the patient via the National Cancer Screening Registry (NCSR) Enrolment Form.
- Complete the request form NLCSP CT Chest Request Form

Am I Eligible for Lung Cancer Screening?
You may be eligible for a fully bulk-billed, low-dose CT scan if you meet all of the following criteria:
- Aged 50-70
- Currently smoke or quit within the last 10 years
- Have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer
- Have a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 pack-years
What to Expect During Your Scan
The low-dose CT scan is quick, painless and does not involve any needles or injections. You will lie on a table with your arms above your head while the scanner captures detailed images of your chest. The entire appointment takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
These scans are performed using advanced imaging technology recently installed at our new Fitzroy facility, which includes software that enhances detection accuracy while minimizing radiation exposure.
Early detection is key. When lung cancer is found early, more than 65% of cases can be successfully treated. For many high-risk individuals with no symptoms, screening offers the best chance to catch cancer before it spreads.
